BEN POTTER

Artist Statement

I am interested in the oscillation between representation and abstraction. This art is derived from places and people I know. Certain gestures of friends, patterns on fields or in creeks: all serve as starting points for drawings, paintings, and sculpture.

I am concerned with the connotations of materials and the elements of chance and nuance they lend to the work. Materials such as milk, soot and pollen have meaning beyond their mark-making qualities. These subtleties relate to the disciplined attention that draws people into the landscape: birders, botanists and artists all pay close attention.
